Work to remove historic mechanics pit underway

A former mechanics pit buried deep underground at the Macquarie Point site is in the process of being removed by local firm JRV Civil Construction Pty Ltd.

Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO, Mary Massina, said the mechanics pit operated back in the 1970’s and was primarily used to assist in the maintenance of vehicles and trains in its former use as a rail and transport depot.

“It’s another interesting story of the sites rich industrial history. By 1978, Macquarie Point continued to be used as a rail and road freight distribution hub, with the mechanics pit integral to its operation.

“Work will include the excavation of existing pits and connecting pipework, the analysis and removal of any contaminated soil and the backfilling of the excavated area,” Ms Massina said.

Macquarie Point Development Corporation has engaged the services of AECOM Pty Ltd in the role of Project Remediation Consultant, with the work to remove the mechanics pit another part of this strategy.

Work is due to be completed before the New Year.
