The final stages of remediation has begun for the remaining area of the escarpment – the first parcel of land which will be offered to the market for permanent development.
Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO, Mary Massina, said work has progressed rapidly onsite.
“It’s pleasing to see the work progress quickly and efficiently with the next stage to include the removal of the concrete batching plant and the re-exposing of the escarpment which was originally quarried in the 1870’s.
“This material would have been used in the formative years of Hobart’s CBD on various construction sites, and re-exposing the rock-face gives us a glimpse into the past.” Ms Massina said.
The Corporation has also adopted a clean green approach in remediating the site where possible.
“The team has been able to reuse some onsite material as fill - crushing concrete from the removal of part of the batching plant to backfill excavated parts of the site – saving money on the importation of quarried soil.
“It’s a great initiative and helps the Corporation contribute to a more cost effective and environmentally conscious way of remediating the site.
“In addition to these works, around 2,000 tonnes of soil will be removed and tested before being disposed of at the Copping Waste Transfer Station,” Ms Massina said.
Once complete, work will begin on the construction of the road which will give greater access to the site and help prepare the way for the first parcels of land to go to market.
Around 26 direct jobs have been created during the remediation work, which is great news in helping to support local jobs and our economy.
